Things to Do in Italy

Stromboli’s eruptive style transitions and vents near the summit produce lava flows

Stromboli, located in the Calabrian volcanic arc, is one of the northeastern most Aeolian islands. Its volcanic activity has been recorded by historians for centuries. Since 1932, it has been experiencing uninterrupted eruptions. This activity varies from mild degassing to lava flows.

The recent period of explosive activity on the island began in July and August 2019. During this time, four targeted paroxysms occurred, each ranging in magnitude from the weakest to the most powerful. They included small-scale events and two large-scale eruptions.

In the past two months, the volcano had experienced a series of violent eruptions, resulting in pyroclastic deposits and a tsunami. On 28 August, an event ejected 9.3 x 104 m3 of ash, covering the entire village of Stromboli. At that time, there were also lava overflows from summit craters.

There are many potential triggering mechanisms for the explosions. One possibility is the release of gas due to decompression. Another possibility is a shallow dynamic system, which may act as a catalyst. These scenarios are of interest for understanding the dynamics of basaltic open-vent systems.

Recent Stromboli eruptions have been characterized by short, discrete, violent explosions. However, a larger quantity of gas could have been injected. Although the exact magnitude of the explosions is variable, historical paroxysms are variable, suggesting that deep magma dynamics are important.

The magnitude of these eruptions can be correlated to physical and chemical characteristics of the magma, but this correlation does not extend to the overall spectrum of the eruptions. For example, recent Stromboli magmas contain low Ta/Th ratios, FME-enriched signatures, and high Rb/Th ratios. But these attributes do not correlate to the magnitude of the explosive eruptions.

Stromboli Volcano is a popular tourist destination in Italy

The Stromboli volcano is an active volcanic area in Italy. It has erupted at least three times in the last century.

A tsunami was generated by a collapse of part of the volcano. This could have caused much damage if it had reached the Sicilian coast.

An underwater portion of the volcano collapsed, causing a ten million cubic meter tsunami. Several villages on the island were damaged, including the town of Ginostra, a tiny village on the south west shore of the island.

After the eruption of the volcano, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised tourists to avoid the island. At the time, the eruption was not known, and there was no warning of an impending event.

As of now, the eruption has reoccurred a couple of times this year. Locals on the island have raised concerns about the volcano. Occasionally, Stromboli has warned of tidal waves.

There are a few non-volcanic sights on the island. However, many visitors flock to the island for its spectacular view of the crater. During the tourist season, there are a few hundred people a day who make the trip up the mountain to see the lava pyrotechnics.

If you are planning to visit the island, you may want to book a guided tour. Those who are adventurous can hire a kayak or paddleboard to enjoy the views of the volcano.

You can also take a day trip from other resorts in the area. But be warned: the island’s ferry connections can be impacted by weather. So you may have to wait awhile.

While the eruption of the Stromboli volcano may be one of the most dramatic events in recent history, it is not the first major explosion of the island. Another major blast occurred on July 27, 2003. The tsunami caused by the explosion killed at least one person, and displaced 70 other people.
