During the American Revolution, General Rochambeau served as commander of the French forces in Newport. Many pirates were hanged here.

In the mid-19th century, a large number of Irish immigrants moved to Newport. This led to the development of the Fifth Ward, which became a staunch Irish neighborhood.

Atlanta
