Cheap Flights From New York (JFK) to Guanacaste (LIR)
Costa Rica is a hot travel destination all year round, but it’s particularly affordable to visit during the rainy season from May-November. That’s because flights are typically $50-$100 cheaper than average (and hotel prices are also lower), and it’s easier to score deals on accommodations and tours.
Airlines are resuming flights to Costa Rica from the United States, but you still need to be flexible with your dates and destinations in order to nab a deal. For example, American has a nonstop flight from JFK to San Jose for $265, but you’ll need to be willing to take a stop in Miami. You can also find great deals on direct flights from New York to Guanacaste Airport with JetBlue, starting at $273.
If you’re flying a large group or are willing to fly private, you can also score cheap flights to Costa Rica by “empty legging” it, which means hopping on the tail of someone else’s trip and going wherever they’re headed. For example, if a private company hires a plane to fly four people from Miami to Costa Rica, and they don’t need the extra seats back to the United States, you can buy those tickets for up to 75% off their regular cost by empty legging it.
There are direct flights to Guanacaste Airport from several cities in the United States, including New York City and Los Angeles. However, many of these are seasonal vacation flights, and the number of available flights is limited during the summer months. You’re more likely to find flights from a larger hub city, such as Orlando, Houston, Denver, or Atlanta.
You can also fly to Costa Rica from the Netherlands, with KLM operating a triangle service from Amsterdam to San Jose and then to Guanacaste Airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. If you’re planning to visit the Arenal Volcano or Monteverde, it’s usually much more convenient to use SJO rather than LIR as your arrival and departure point.
